Papers, 1888-1917.

These papers are mostly letters from youthful friends of Charles E. House ("Domus"). They discuss school, social occasions, work, and romance. The longest series is from his cousin Margaret (House?), a young woman teaching school in Brooklyn. Another series is from a friend, John R. Edwards, at Princeton Preparatory School, Lawrenceville, N.J.A few of House's letters to his friends are also included. House had a number of jobs. He apparently worked in a store and in the comptroller's office of Scranton; later he was a bill collector for N.Y. publisher George D. Sproul. Around 1898, House moved to Marion, N.C. where he was Keeper of Records and Seals of the Knights of Pythias. A few letters, lists, and receipts from this organization are included. He probably kept a store as well. His family seems to have been associated with THE MCDOWELL DEMOCRAT of Marion, because there are two 1904 letters with House names on the letterhead of the newspaper.
